The Strangest Things That Have Broken Windshields

If you ask most drivers what breaks a windshield, they’ll usually say the same thing: a rock from the road.
And yes — rocks are by far the most common culprit we see at Hampton Auto Glass.
But windshields have been broken by some pretty strange things over the years. When you start digging into real stories from around the world, it turns out that almost anything traveling fast enough can shatter automotive glass.
Here are some of the strangest things ever recorded breaking a windshield.
1. A Meteorite From Outer Space
This might be the rarest windshield break ever.
A family in England woke up to find their car windshield smashed with a mysterious rock nearby. After investigating, they discovered the culprit was likely a meteorite that had fallen from space and punched through the glass.
The odds of this happening are extremely small — some estimates say billions to one — but it proves that sometimes the damage literally comes from outer space.
Imagine trying to explain that one to your insurance company.
2. Baseballs From Professional Games
If you park near a baseball field, you might want to keep an eye out.
During batting practice at a professional baseball game, a powerful home run once flew out of the stadium and shattered the windshield of a truck parked nearby.
Professional hitters can send baseballs traveling over 100 mph, which is easily enough to break auto glass.
So yes — a baseball can absolutely cost someone a windshield.
3. Giant Hailstones
Hail is more common than meteorites, but it can still be shocking.
During severe storms in the United States, baseball-size hail has been recorded smashing windshields and even punching through them.
Hail that large can fall at speeds of 70–100 mph, which is why big storms often lead to a spike in windshield replacements.
4. Random Flying Objects
Sometimes the strangest breaks come from completely unexpected objects.
There have been reports of windshields broken by things like:
Loose construction materials
Tools falling from trucks
Lawn equipment debris
Coffee mugs or cups thrown from passing vehicles
Even pumpkins during fall season
The reality is that anything heavy enough and moving fast enough can break a windshield.
Thank Goodness for the Safety of your Windshield
Modern windshields are designed with laminated safety glass. That means they are actually made of two layers of glass with a plastic layer in between.
This design helps:
Prevent the glass from shattering into dangerous pieces
Protect passengers during accidents
Support airbag deployment
But even though they’re strong, windshields are still vulnerable to sudden high-speed impacts.
That’s why something as small as a rock chip can quickly turn into a long crack.
When a Small Chip Turns Into a Big Problem
Many drivers ignore a small chip thinking it’s no big deal.
But temperature changes, road vibration, and time can cause that chip to spread across the entire windshield.
The good news is that small chips can often be repaired quickly and affordably if caught early.
