How to File an Auto Glass Insurance Claim in Washington State (Without the Runaround)

Let's be honest — dealing with insurance claims is nobody's idea of a good time. You're already frustrated because a rock kicked up by a logging truck on Highway 14 just left a crack spider-webbing across your windshield. The last thing you want is to spend an hour on hold, get shuffled between departments, and then find out the shop your insurer "recommended" is 45 minutes away and has a two-week wait.

Here's the good news: filing an auto glass insurance claim in Washington State is actually one of the simpler insurance processes out there — if you know what you're doing. We've helped hundreds of Clark County drivers navigate it, and we want to make it even easier for you. At Hampton Auto Glass, you don't have to figure this out alone. Come in and see us, or let us jump on a three-way call with your insurance company right alongside you. We'll handle the heavy lifting from start to finish.

First Things First: Does Your Insurance Even Cover It?

Auto glass damage is typically covered under the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy — not collision. That distinction matters because comprehensive and collision often carry different deductibles.

Before anything else, pull up your declarations page (or call your agent) and answer two

questions:

Do you have comprehensive coverage? If you only carry liability, glass damage is out-of-pocket. Most drivers in Washington who have a loan or lease on their vehicle carry comprehensive, but it's worth confirming.

What is your comprehensive deductible? Washington is one of many states where insurers offer a zero-deductible glass endorsement — sometimes called "full glass coverage." If you have this on your policy, your windshield replacement could cost you absolutely nothing out of pocket. If your deductible exceeds the cost of the repair, it may make more sense to pay out of pocket — and we'll give you an honest quote so you can make that call.

> **Pro Tip:** If you've never checked whether you have zero-deductible glass coverage, call your agent today. It's often a small add-on premium that pays for itself the first time a rock hits your windshield — and in the Pacific Northwest, that's not a matter of *if*, it's *when.*

Step 1: Come See Us First — We'll Set Up the Claim With You

This is where most people get stressed out unnecessarily. They assume they have to call their insurance company, figure out the claim on their own, find a shop, and then somehow coordinate everything in between.

Not with us.

When you come into Hampton Auto Glass, one of our team members will sit down with you and walk through the entire process. We do this every single day. If it's easier, we can get your insurance company on the phone right there — a three-way call between you, us, and your insurer — so nothing gets lost in translation and the claim gets set up correctly the first time.

Here's what we take care of on your behalf:

Help you initiate the claim or join you on the call with your insurer

Verify your coverage and confirm your deductible

Get the claim authorized and handle all billing directly with the insurance company

Order the correct OEM or OE equivalent glass for your specific vehicle

Schedule your installation — in shop or mobile, whatever works for you

You shouldn't have to be a middleman. Come in, let us take the wheel, and leave with the peace of mind that it's handled.

Step 2: Know Your Right to Choose Your Own Shop

When you contact your glass claim department online or over the phone, they will likely suggest one of their "preferred" or "network" shops. They may make it sound like you have to use their shop.

You don't.

Washington State law gives you the right to choose your own repair facility. Under RCW 48.22.005 and related regulations, your insurance company cannot require you to use a specific repairer or penalize you for going elsewhere. They can suggest a shop. They cannot mandate one.

If they push, here's exactly what to say: "I'd like to use Hampton Auto Glass. Please authorize the claim with them directly." We'll handle everything from there.

Insurance company "preferred networks" exist for their convenience and cost management not necessarily yours. Shops in those networks have agreed to labor and parts rates that can sometimes lead to shortcuts: aftermarket glass instead of OEM-equivalent, skipped calibration steps, rushed installs. You have the right to choose a shop you trust — one that will back their work with a real warranty and do the job right the first time.

Step 3: Understand What's Actually Covered

Most comprehensive policies cover windshield replacement with minimal friction. A few things worth knowing:

Rock chips vs. full replacement: If the damage is a chip smaller than a dollar bill and not in your direct line of sight, many insurers will cover a repair rather than a full replacement — often at zero cost to you even if you have a deductible, because repair is cheaper than replacement. We'll assess the damage honestly and tell you whether a repair is a safe option or whether replacement is the right call.

ADAS calibration: If your vehicle has a camera mounted to or near the windshield — which most vehicles from 2016 onward do — that camera must be recalibrated after any windshield replacement. This is a separate but critical step. Some insurers cover it automatically; others require it to be itemized on the claim. We use an Autel calibration system here at Hampton and handle this in-house, and we'll make sure it's properly included in your claim. Skipping calibration can affect your lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and other safety systems — it's not optional.

Rental coverage: If your vehicle is unsafe to drive while glass is being ordered or installed, check whether your policy includes rental reimbursement under your comprehensive coverage. Many do — and we can help you confirm that on the call.

The "Should I File a Claim?" Question

This one comes up all the time, and the honest answer is: it depends on your deductible.

If your deductible is $0 or very low: File the claim. There's no reason not to.

If your deductible is close to or exceeds the repair cost: Paying out of pocket is often the smarter move. We'll give you a straight quote so you can compare.

If it's a small chip that can be repaired: Many insurers waive the deductible entirely for repairs. Always worth checking — and we can help you find out.

Not sure which way to go? Come in or give us a call. We'll look at the damage, give you honest numbers, and let you decide without any pressure.
